The father is more involved in the process of bringing up children, mainly because the mother goes out to work. I don't, and it has taken me until my fifties to understand how parents feel about their children. You hear teens describe how their dad used to beat up their mom, how an absent father had five kids with different women and abandoned them all.
Don't forget that children need patience, understanding and love as well as firmness.
In my opinion all parents love their children and giving them more or less freedom than needed is just a different approach to upbringing. Millions of poor children and teenagers grow up without their biological father, and often when you ask them about it, you hear a litany of male barbarism. Authoritative parents love their children unconditionally and accept them for who they are. They keep a close eye on their children, provide them with plenty of support, set firm boundaries, and grant considerable freedom within those boundaries.
